I think the Mets would still like to give Church the opportunity to play every day, and more than anything it's the injury status of Carlos Delgado that is forcing the Mets hand. Thames plays a bit of first base, and Jimmy Leyland has been talking up Thames' skills at the position this spring.

Trading Sosa also opens up a spot for a guy like Steven Register (who the Mets would lose altogether otherwise) while El Duque can potentially slot in as the long man in the pen.

Jon Heyman, who broke the story on WFAN, indicated that Sosa wouldn't be enough to get a deal done, so I wonder what else the Mets would be willing to part with. The Tigers need a setup man, but I don't think Duaner or Heilman are going anywhere.
