How many coaches are better than TC?

Giants Rumors & News

Compared to the head coaches of the other 31 NFL teams, where does Tom Coughlin rank?

I started wondering about this the other day when it was announced that Coughlin’s 4-year, $21 million extension with the Giants had become official.

He has long been considered a good coach. Now that he has a Super Bowl championship to add to his resume, and has built a better relationship with his players, he has to be considered upper echelon.

Coughlin has a 103-89 career record, a Super Bowl title, another conference championship game appearance with Jacksonville and 8 playoffs wins in 14 tries. No matter what you think of him personally, that is pretty impressive.

Real Football 365 went so far last month as to proclaim that Coughlin could be headed to the Hall of Fame with a few more good seasons in New York.

That’s a stunning assertion considering Coughlin’s uncertain status in New York as recently as the end of the regular season.

I won’t go that far, but he has be considered among the league’s …

Jagr Says He Won’t Be Distraction…Too Late

Rangers Rumors & News

The Captain speaks! And no, it’s not exactly “We’ll Win Tonight” bulletin board material.

Instead, Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr has decided to speak to the Post’s Larry Brooks about his contract situation, which will see him hit the free agent market this offseason unless he improbably records 26 points in the team’s final 13 games and leads the team to a first round victory in the postseason.

According to Jagr, he doesn’t want to be a distraction to the team, but he’s going to go ahead and talk about his contract anyway. He says he doesn’t want his future to be an issue, so he’s going to tease everyone with cryptic remarks while refusing to elaborate in any meaningful way.

Confused? You’re not alone. Via the Post:

“I know it’s almost impossible for me to get to the number I need to get my option year, and I’m OK with that. I’m OK with becoming a free agent if that’s what happens. My focus isn’t on how many goals …

Valentin Makes Return

Mets Rumors & News

It’s been eight months since Jose Valentin played a game for the Mets.  A key veteran in the Mets 2006 post-season run, he spent most of 2007 on the disabled list, eventually ending his season in late July when he underwent knee surgery.

Ahead of his rehabilitaion schedule, Valentin made his spring debut yesterday.  He started at first base and played five innings.  Although he went 0 for 2, Valentin’s return couldn’t come at a better time for the Mets.  The Mets have been banged up all spring. with 13 players missing time as a result of nagging injuries.  Given the Mets injuries, the depth of the Mets bench has been called into question, even to the point where there were rumors of Barry Bonds playing a season at Shea.

Although they were just rumors that most laughed at, that lack of depth was no laughing matter.  A healthy Valentin helps solve that lack of depth.  In his sixteen-year career, Valentin has played six of the eight positions on the diamond (he’s never played center …
