It looks like former overall No. 1 pick David Carr could be the backup for Eli Manning next season.

How would you feel about that?

Carr, according to several published reports, will be visiting with the Giants tonight and Thursday.

The Giants have aggressively looked for an upgrade over Anthony Wright and Jared Lorenzen this offseason. Considering that Trent Green, another backup target, is off the market having agreed to a three-year, $9 million contract with the Rams, it appears that Carr and Joey Harrington are the best options left on the market.

Carr makes sense because, as the Daily News’ Ralph Vacchiano reports in his Blue Screen blog, Giants’ quarterbacks coach Chris Palmer was Carr’s offensive coordinator from 2002-2005.

Carr, 28, has had a spotty career and is looked at by many as a flop. He has 62 career touchdown passes, 70 interceptions and a 74.4 rating in his six-year career. Last season, Carr played six games in Carolina before getting hurt.

Look at Carr’s career honestly and you have to think he has never been in a situation where he had a legitimate chance to succeed.

As quarterback for the expansion Texans, he was regularly pounded. He was sacked an astounding 76 times in 2002, 49 times in 2004 and 68 times in 2005.

In contrast, Manning was sacked just 27 times last season.

Playing behind an offensive line that gives him a chance to stay upright, you have to think Carr would be a vast improvement over Wright and Lorenzen.

Considering what is available on the market, this seems like a good move for the Giants to make.
