Well to be honest, there is not too many reasons to watch our beloved Islanders. They are not the fastest team or the most physical or the most exciting to watch. They do not have a superstar forward to draw fans in and lets face it, the Coliseum is not the greatest arena you will ever step into. But have faith fellow Isles fans, here are a few reasons why we all need to keep watching:
Rick DiPietro- For better or worse, DiPietro will be entertaining night in and night out. No offense to Billy Smith or any other goalies the Islanders have had
but DiPietro is the most naturally gifted goalie this team has ever had between the pipes. He is the franchise player and seems to put on a show every game. If it wasn’t for such a porous defense around him, DP would find himself in the running for the Vezina Trophy every year.
The Kids- Blake Comeau leads a corps group of Islanders youngsters that fans have become accustomed to watching. Comeau has proven to the fan base and coaching staff that he has what it takes to play in this league. With his patience with the puck and precision passing, Comeau could turn out to be a Scott Gomez type of player. Jeff Tambellini is another budding prospect for the Islanders. In 43 games in Bridgeport this year, Tambs had 28 goals but has never seemed to put it all together with the big team. He has never been given a fair shake though until this year. Other players to look out for on the
horizon are Franz Nielsen, Jeremy Colliton and Kyle Okposo.
Ted Nolan- Nolan was unfairly shunned by the hockey world until last year due to his “actions” off the ice. Nolan has one of the best hockey minds and knows how to get every ounce of energy from his players. There are not many coaches I would take over Teddy. Every player loves him (maybe besides Hasek) and when you have a coach whom the players respect, it’s always a good thing.
And last but certainly not least, it’s HOCKEY! Why would you not watch it? Don’t worry fans, I’m sure we will be back on top in no time, hopefully, maybe….Hey, a guy can wish right?
