Tatis’ Gain | Braves Snare Gotay

Mets Rumors & News

Disappointing news from the waiver wire today as Ruben Gotay has been claimed by none other than the Atlanta Braves, and Rule V pick Steven Register has been returned to the Colorado Rockies.

Gotay’s departure means that the role of utility man now belongs to Fernando Tatis. The New York Post has a good profile of Tatis and his road back to the majors in today’s edition.

MetsBlog’s Matt Cerrone meanwhile wonders aloud if the Mets have surrendered the next Melvin Mora. Unlikely, needless to say, however given the franchise’s blunder-filled past, it would surprise no one.

I agree with Cerrone in that while I won’t miss Gotay terribly, I’m not sure I see the logic of losing that young bat for the sake of clearing a roster spot for a guy like Fernando Tatis. The Mets hope Tatis will fair better against left-handed pitching than Gotay did, and also like his versatility. But let’s not forget, this is a guy who hasn’t gotten at-bats in the …

Playoffs? Playoffs? Jagr To Speak To Russian GM Next Week

Rangers Rumors & News

My biggest issue with the Jaromir Jagr contract situation is that the captain’s plea that he doesn’t wish to be a distraction to the team rings hollow when we’re reading and writing about it every day.

Yesterday it was reported that Anatoly Bardin, GM of Russia’s Avangard Omsk, would be flying to New York next week to begin negotiations with Jagr about potentially returning next season to the team for whom he played during the NHL lockout.

This comes on the heals of Jagr’s cryptic remarks to the Post earlier this month that he has “a pretty good idea” what he’s going to do next season, but he’s not going to tell any of us for fear of being a distraction. Well played, Jags.

What we should be discussing today is the Blueshirts’ seventh consecutive victory against the rival Devils this season. But instead…

Today in the Daily News, John Dellapina informs us that Jagr is open to meeting with Bardin at some point next …

Yankees Rumors & News

Yesterday we reported on Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui’s recent nuptials and the odd press conference he held, during which he displayed a pencil sketch of his new bride in efforts to protect her identity, and showcase his burgeoning artistic talent.

Today, the local papers have caught up, though what interests me most isn’t their coverage of the press conference, but rather this line buried in an article in the Daily News:

Matsui, also known back home for his large collection of porn films, said he and his wife have been planning their wedding for a year.

Needless to say, this called for some further digging. Evidently in ’03 Matsui was featured in the Asian edition of Time Magazine. An excerpt:

Indeed, his only eccentricity, if it can be called that, is his extensive private library of adult videos. His refreshing ability to laugh self-deprecatingly about his porno collection, reporters say, is one reason why fans and even nonfans have taken to him so much.

So Hideki Matsui …

Jets, Coles Reach Compromise On Contract

Jets Rumors & News

update no. 2…
ESPN’s report is indeed accurate, as Newsday’s Tom Rock is now reporting that the Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on Coles’ contract, but have not negotiated an extension. Big kudos to Team Tangini on this one…

Contrary to ESPN’s report, the Post reported this morning that Coles has in fact received an extension on his deal. We’ll have to wait and see which report is accurate…

According to, the Jets have agreed to guarantee the remaining $11 million on wide receiver Laveranues Coles’ contract. It was thought that the team would have to go further to appease Coles, who always seems malcontent when it comes to his contract. However it seems the two sides have reached a compromise, which is good news for Gang Green.

In the same report, ESPN indicated that Coles griped earlier in the offseason about the Jets’ spending spree on outside talent while incumbent players weren’t being taken care of. In reality, Jets veterans were quoted anonymously …

Pacman, Cowboys a perfect marriage

Giants Rumors & News

Have the Dallas Cowboys offered Tennessee a player along with a 7th-round draft choice for Adam “Pacman” Jones? That seems to depend on who you ask.

Blogging the Boys has a great breakdown of the Cowboys’ apparent pursuit of the troubled former Tennessee star.

Pacman apparently wants to be a Cowboy, and Dallas seems to be at the top of the list of potential destinations for Jones — provided of course that Roger Goodell lets Pacman back in the league.

All I can is good luck controlling THAT locker room, Wade Phillips! Add Jones to Terrell “Crybaby” Owens, Tony “Mr. Simpson” Romo, Tank Johnson and some of the other personalities in that locker room and Phillips will have no chance.

There are also rumors that owner Jerry Jones is interested in enigmatic Cincinnati wide receiver Chad Johnson. Yikes!

Personally, as a Giants’ fan, it wouldn’t bother me at all to see the Cowboys bring in all these guys. With the loss of various coaches and front office personnel, Jason Garrett waiting in …
