mike-pelfrey.jpgSomewhat surprisingly, Mike Pelfrey will begin the season as the Mets’ fifth starter, making his first start on April 5th in Atlanta. Pelfrey didn’t exactly pitch his way into the rotation, however the Mets evidently have decided that Orlando Hernandez will benefit from a stint on the DL to allow the pitcher more time to get healthy and build up his arm strength.

Even more unexpected, Brady Clark has made the team as a 5th outfielder after speculation had mounted that the loss of Ruben Gotay had vaulted Fernando Tatis to the front of the pack of roster hopefuls.

Joe Smith, meanwhile, will round out the bullpen until Duaner Sanchez is deemed ready to go.

Of the group, I’m happiest for Clark, who worked hard all spring despite a numbers crunch that was somewhat stacked against him. If only he could play a little bit of first…
