claudio.jpgWith Pedro Martinez on the shelf for at least a month (most likely longer), the idea of Nelson Figueroa or Jorge Sosa completing the back end of the rotation with Mike Pelfrey, is a scary thought to some Mets fans.  Figueroa is what most would consider a “Quadruple-A” pitcher, and Sosa has more value as a middle reliever.  This situation has also caught the attention of Omar Minaya.

While nothing is imminent, Minaya has confirmed that he met with Bean Stringfellow (yes, that’s his real name), agent for free agent pitcher Claudio Vargas.  Vargas had a strong spring (3-1, 3.86) , but given the Brewers deep pitching staff he ended up being the odd man out.  Vargas isn’t what you’d call a dominating pitcher, but he is a serviceable arm at the back of the rotation.

Omar is no stranger to Vargas.  While with the Expos, Vargas was acquired from the Marlins along with former Met Cliff Floyd
