On a rainy night in Kansas City the relievers started and the starter relieved as the Yankees offense again failed to show in the 4-0 loss to the Royals Wednesday.
With rain in the forecast manager Joe Girardi decided to have Brian Bruney start in case the weather kept the game from finishing. Once the rain had subsided enough that it was obvious they would finish the game Ian Kennedy came on in relief to finish the day.
Bruney was good in his “start” going 2 innings while striking out 4, giving up 1 hit, and walking 1. Billy Traber then came in and pitched a scoreless third inning. He then gave way to Kyle Farnsworth who did his best impersonating a batting practice coach giving up 2 runs, 4 hits, and 2 walks over 2 innings.
When Kennedy finally entered the game the Yankees were down 2-0 against a team they should be able to come back against, but the bats stayed quite. The lowlight included Jason Giambi lowering his season average to .056 by going 0-4. He has just 1 hit this season in 18 at bats.
Alberto Gonzalez and Jose Molina decently filled in for the injured Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada by going 2-7 combined. The two hits were a pair of doubles.
The biggest culprit in the loss was Zach Greinke, who apparently is a good pitcher when he is on zoloft. He went 8 innings giving up no runs while surrendering just 6 hits and 2 walks. He improved to 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA.
The Yankees will try to keep themselves from being swept by the Royals by sending Andy Pettitte to the mound Thursday. Pettitte is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in one start this year.
