The Devils are back in it. By taking what would be called a high scoring game between the two teams, New Jersey has pulled to within one game as they were finally able to solve Henrik Lundqvist Sunday.

John Madden and Sergie BrylinNot since the first round of the 2005-06 playoffs have the Devils been able to score more than two goals off of Lundqvist. They beat him because of a pair of lucky bounces that went off the Rangers own skaters.

Early in the first period Sergei Brylin got credited with a goal that bounced off of Ranger centerman Blair Betts‘ stick. The Devils got lucky again 6:01 into overtime when John Madden sent the game winning goal toward the net that went in off of Marc Staal’s skates to give them the game 4-3.

The Devils also got a pair of power play goals by Patrik Elias and Zach Parise. Elias tied the game at two in the second period and just over two minutes later Parise’s gave them a 3-2 lead.

The Rangers picked up three goals of their own, which would have been enough beat the Devils in any of the regular season games this year. They got contributions from Brandon Dubinsky twice; once in the first period and then again early in the third on a powerplay. Both goals tied the game. The Rangers had a 2-1 lead once in the second period after Scott Gomez did a head fake on Martin Brodeur as he looked to the point and instead passed to Sean Avery in front of the net.

Despite giving up four goals Lundqvist played a stellar game. Going forward the Rangers still have to have a lot of confidence in their goalie, but should focus more on being less sloppy defensively.

The road team has won each game so far. When Brylin scored early in the first the Garden crowd lost a lot of momentum and the Rangers need to pick up the first goal on Wednesday to restore any actual advantage they might get from playing at home.

Game four Wednesday. I need to go find a bar which gets Versus.
