A routine slide might have caused a major problem for the Yankees as they are expected to send Jose Molina to the DL after he strained his left hamstring during the forth inning Sunday.
Molina has been filling in behind the plate on nearly a regular basis this year after Jorge Posada strained his shoulder and cannot throw out runners. He’s been doing a good job too. After going 2-for-4 on Sunday Molina is batting .364 and he leads the team with seven doubles.
The Yankees are expected to call up Chad Moeller from the minor leagues to replace Molina. Moeller is a 33-year-old journeyman who last played with the Los Angeles Dodgers and has a career .224 batting average. He was signed by the Yankees the same day he was released by the Washington Nationals this past March 10, 2008.
There is no expected date for Posada to return, but he is not expected to start behind the plate Monday night because his shoulder is still barking. There is no word on when to expect Molina back in the lineup.
