Angel Pagan has been a savior for the Mets through the first three weeks of the season. His .317 average and 11 RBI’s are one of the main reasons the Mets find themselves at 10-6, atop the NL East. Pagan’s hot start to this young season also made it easy to forget about the teams starting left fielder, Moises Alou.
Alou, 41, had hernia surgery on March 6th, and has been recovering with a target of a late-April return. Two weeks ago Alou finally returned to the field and has been progressing at extended spring training. Today Alou made his most recent step in his quest to Flushing; a rehab start in Single A.
Alou started today for the St. Lucie Mets and was sharp. Alou batted third and for the first time played left field. Alou went 3 for 3 with a double as the St. Lucie Mets lost 10-5 to the Palm Beach Cardinals. After the game Alou was said to feel good, so everything seems to be positive.
While Alou still has a good week of rehab starts, today’s play was very encouraging. Barring no setbacks, Alou should rejoin the Mets by month’s end.

It’s great to see that Pagan is playing so well when given the opportunity. He’s a solid player who’s never had a chance to start regularly. The only reason the Cubs traded him was because they had about 7 potential starting outfielders this spring and somebody had to go.
