Since Brandon Dubinsky’s top-shelf shot went into the empty net in New Jersey the Rangers and their fans have been wondering who they will face in the second round. Tonight they will get that answer.
That’s because tonight’s match between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals decides who the Blue-shirts will play in the Atlantic Conference Semifinals.
In the second round of the playoffs the bracket is not reseeded, which means that if the Capitals win their series they would be ranked higher than the Rangers. That would create a Rangers versus Canadiens series and a Penguins versus Capitals series.
This scenario would be good for the NHL because it would create an Original Six playoff and not to mention it would pit two the the leagues best young stars against each other. Sindney Crosby versus Alexander Ovechkin!
If the Flyers win tonight they would play the Canadiens and the Rangers would go up against the Penguins. A Flyers/Canadiens series might be boring and possibly one-sided, but imagine the huge ratings (alright they still might not out draw the WNBA) this series could get featuring Sidney Crosby starring on Broadway.
Bet that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is hoping for the Capitals to win tonight. Not only would Ovechkin stay in the playoffs, but that scenario could still draw a Rangers/Penguins match-up in the conference finals.
If you’re lucky enough to get Versus tune in tonight and watch what should be an exciting Flyers/Capitals game seven.
