breakfast.jpgToday we start a new feature hear at Hot Stove New York. Let’s call it ‘Breakfast at the Hot Stove.’

As the name implies what we are going to do each morning is give you a review of what’s cooking on the New York sports scene. We’ll give you the news, but we’re not playing it straight.

We’ll try to start your day with a laugh (spitting up a little OJ never hurt anybody), or get you a little aggravated before you head to the office (just don’t take it out on the boss).

So, grab that extra morning cup of coffee and come along. It’s breakfast time and the Hot Stove is open for business.

The Bacon: Sharapova visits Letterman

Yeah, I know this isn’t really sports. And I know it happened a couple of days ago. But, hell, it’s Maria Sharapova and any time I can gave breakfast, lunch, dinner, an intimate moment … you get the idea … with Maria, I’m doing it. Besides, this did happen in New York.

Watch the video and tell me Maria doesn’t have a little Heidi Klum look going on there. Not that I’m complaining, of course.

Burnt Toast: Isiah gagged

Poor Isiah Thomas. He can’t even go all Kelvin Sampson on the Knicks and talk to his ex-players behind management’s back. As ‘gozer’ told you yesterday, Isiah has been ordered not to have contact with Knicks players. Except for the mess he left behind, it’s almost like he never existed.

Here is one final tribute to Isiah, courtesy of the incredible Ryan Parker.

Oh, and one more thing about the Knicks. I am getting more respect for Jeff Van Gundy all the time. He’s turning into a really good color commentator on NBA games, and he wants no part of cleaning up Isiah’s mess.

Breakfast Sandwich: Chicago style

How is it that both the Mets and Yankees wound up playing in Chicago at the same time? The New York Times has more on this unusual circumstance.

The Mets were sloppy on the mound and in the field in an 8-1 loss. Joba Chamberlain made a pretty good statement last night for why — at least right now — he helps the Yankees as a setup man. He bailed the Yankees out of a huge 7th inning jam as they went on to win, 9-5.

Donut holes

  • This is why you have to love Joba Chamberlain. He could care less about the controversy over whether he should start or relieve.
  • A new QB for the Jets? It’s a draft rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. But, there are whispers out of Baltimore that the Jets will take Matt Ryan with the 6th pick and send Chad Pennington to the Ravens.
  • Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News is reporting that the Patriots seem to have forgotten that the Giants won the Super Bowl. I agree with Vacchiano that Giants fans likely have plenty of ideas what they can do with that 19-0 patent.
  • Alex Rodriguez called the birth Monday of his second daughter “a blessing.” The only blessing Yankee fans want right now is for A-Rod’s leg to heal so he can get back in the lineup.
