Good morning, New York sports fans! Before we dig into our daily ‘Breakfast at the Hot Stove,’ give somebody close to you a hug. Nobody around? Give yourself a hug. C’mon, it’s OK. Wrap those arms around yourself and squeeze.

After all, that’s the least we can do to honor Harold Reynolds, hired by SNY as a part-time studio analyst.

Reynolds, you will recall, is the former big league second baseman and ESPN analyst who was forced to leave the network in 2006 due to allegations of sexual harassment.

The folks at Hugging Harold Reynolds are very excited about this news! Yippee!

Peaches and Cream: Ozzie loves Derek

It’s a very lovey-dovey morning here at the Hot Stove. Apparently, Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has a huge man-crush on Derek Jeter. As I said this morning over and Bugs & Cranks, the whole thing makes me uncomfortable.

Fast food: Danica visits Dave

This is one of those ‘it happened in New York’ deals. The video is here.

Bran Flakes: Is there a first baseman in the city?

What is it about New York teams and first baseman? Neither team has one. The Yankees’ Jason Giambi entered last night hitting .135, and his atrocious defense damn near got pitcher Phil Hughes killed in the first inning. Giambi barely fielded a groundball and tried to flip it to Hughes, only to bounce it and force Hughes to scoop it on the run. I was amazed Hughes didn’t pull a hammy.

As for the Mets’ Carlos Delgado, his .198 batting average has fans wondering if anybody else on the roster can play the position.

Hash Browns: Larry Brown is available

The Knicks need a coach and Larry Brown just left the 76ers. So, that got Knicks Knacks to wondering if maybe Brown should come back to New York and earn some of that money James Dolan has already paid him. It will never happen, but it sure would be fun.

Forgot the Wheaties: Yanks, Mets both lose

The Mets got pounded last night, 10-5. As for the Yanks, Joba Chamberlain actually lost a game (gasp!).

Trade Hughes, Ian, Rasner, Ponson - Go get Sabathia, AJ Burnett to go along side of Wang and Petite (who will be back to pitch in the new stadium) with the chance of Mussina being a 5th if he wants to pitch.

I get that they were injured, and agreed that they battled and played hard. Nobody can dispute the effort, but the bottom line is a playoff spot where there for the taking and they didn't close the deal. They weren't the underdog and overmatched, they played bad baseball against teams like Pittsburgh, Washington, Florida and Chicago's backups.

I agree completely. This year didn't feel at all like 2007. If anything it felt more like 2006 or even '99 when the team battled and battled and ultimately seemed to run out of magic fairy dust. In a lot of ways it was a proper send-off for Shea, because isn't this what the Mets do? Isn't this what the franchise is all about? The Mets aren't comfortable with success. That lead last September was just too large, the road ahead too easy, time and space threatened to collapse had the Mets not fallen on their faces. Now we can add 2008 to the pantheon of Amazin' disappointments. At least this was a group of which I can remain proud. Btw, I've found a new top rival. I hate the Phillies, but after two years in a row of this horse manure, I HATE HATE HATE the marlins.
