It was not too long ago when Carlos Beltran was the one hearing the ire of Mets fan. At one point during his struggle with the fans, Beltran was given a peace offering by Mets nation and they asked him for a “Curtain Call.” If it was up to Beltran, he would have stayed in the dugout to spite the fans. But a certain elder statesman in the Mets clubhouse, Julio Franco, put his arm around Beltran and convinced him that taking a bow for the fans would be beneficial to his stay in New York.
But during yesterday afternoons game against the Braves the other Carlos, Carlos Delgado, was called upon this time. Due to his early season slump, fans decided it was time to get on this Carlos’ back and let him hear their displeasure. That’s
why yesterday was a sight for sore eyes for Mets fans. After hitting an opposite field homerun against John Smoltz and later a bomb of a homerun that smacked into the right field scoreboard, fans implored Delgado to rise to the top step of the dugout and meet their praise.
But to Mets fan chagrin, Delgado sat idly in the dugout as they cheered him on. Very soon, jeers that turned into cheers, were jeers once again. By not responding to the fans call, Delgado received a rather large “booing” from the crowd. Maybe if Franco was still around, Delgado would have known it might have been a better decision to go out for the Curtain Call.
Delgado gave reasoning for not acknowledging the fans:
“It surprised me. The way I look at it, the fans here are very passionate, and you just don’t know what they’re gonna do…You hit a home run, shake hands with your friends, but you don’t want to show any one up. The game goes on. We had a two run lead, it went to a three-run lead. Yes, it’s a big run…but, I got a great deal of respect for the game and I don’t think that’s a place for a curtain call…We appreciate the support of the fans, but we’re here to play the game. They pay me to hit the ball and drive in runs. I didn’t think it was the right situation. Having said that, I’m not going to lie that I feel good and it’s a lot better than the boos.
Whether he thought it was the wrong time or not, Delgado needs to realize that this is New York. The fans here will love you today and despise you tomorrow. Curtain Calls from Mets fans are not an everyday occurrence. So when you do something that New York fans think is worthy of a Curtain Call, you might want to go to the top step of the dugout, wave your helmet and go sit back down.

hmmm…they’re yelling about this on wfan right now. i kinda disagree. this situation somehow felt very different than the one with beltran. with beltran, it was more significant because he had six years ahead of him. with delgado, i don’t really care. i was watching yesterday, i thought it was funny that he didn’t go out. also, beltran looked angry and bitter when he refused his curtain call. delgado looked happy that he’d had a good day, and indifferent to the chants. i don’t know, it just didn’t bother me. and i accept his explanation.
Personally i didn’t really care that he didn’t go out. But as you know, their are tons of fickle fans out there who will not forgive Delgado for not going out. Hopefully not, but he may never hear the end of this.
Well if he is good from now on all will be forgotten. So, maybe you’re right.
Delgado was right. There was no reason to have a curtain call at that moment. Good for him.
i don’t blame delgato.any decent loyal fan would not boo their team or teams players.i watched the yankees in the 80′s when they were terrible and wanted them to get rid of many players but i didn’t boo any of them.they are trying their best every at bat and booing won’t change a thing and shows no class as a society.i am sick of hearing this is new york and thats the way it is.it doesn’t have to be and it is wrong.delgato should have gone out to be humble and rise above the negativity of the fans but it is wrong for the fans to boo.santanna has a 3-2 record with a 3.12 era and a whip under 1.00 and he got booed.pitching doesn’t get much better than that.take santanna away and the mets are finished easilly.go root for you’re team the right way by supporting you’re team and players without booing them.
