No Surgery For Posada|Will Miss 5 Weeks
Jorge Posada will not need surgery after all, but will miss at least five weeks while he allows his shoulder to rest.
“I thought I was going to have to get surgery. We’re going to look at that option probably after the season,” said Posada. “All the doctors agree, it just needs rest.”
Posada said he injured his shoulder during spring training because he was forced to put extra pressure on his shoulder as compensation for a sore muscle on his right side.
Posada sought the advice of team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon, orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, the Met’s medical director Dr. David Altchek, and Red’s team doctor Timothy Kremchek who is a shoulder specialist.
Posada had been spending time as a DH after he initially came out of the lineup, but not wanting to risk any further injury they are shutting him down for at least two weeks before rehab.
“We’re talking, you know, two weeks off from throwing, and see where we’re at from there,” manager Joe Girardi said. “If everything goes OK to that point, my thought is probably two weeks of strengthening the arm with throwing, and then you start thinking about some games.”
Once Posada is healthy enough to get into games he will likely play in some minor league games prior to returning to the Yankees.
This is the first time the 36-year-old catcher has ever been on the disabled list, a span of 1,450 games.
