The Yankees front office is showing confidence in a team that has won six games in a row and have gone out and made a splash trading for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte according to SI.com.

Just three games back in the AL East and the Wild Card the Yankees have decided they are going for it and have traded relief pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, minor league slugging prospect Jose Tabata, and double-A pitchers Phil Coke and George Kontos.

Nady has a .330 batting average, .919 OPS, and has 13 homers and 57 RBI’s this season. He will likely be inserted in the Yankees lineup as the everyday left fielder for now. Once Johnny Damon fully mends his shoulder he may get starts as the DH a few games a week.

Marte is 4-0 this season with a 3.47 ERA. His 1.16 WHIP and .217 batting average against are very impressive. He becomes the lefty reliever the Yankees have lacked for years, although Marte actually fares better against righties.

Marte is in the second year of a two year contract. He also has a club option for $6 million, which the Yankees will likely pick up. Nady is a free agent at the end of this season. He is playing on a one-year $3.35 million contract.

Ohlendorf is the only player the Yankees sent to Pittsburgh with any major league experience. Appearing primarily in long relief this season he had a 1-1 record with a 6.53 ERA, a 1.73 WHIP, and a .299 BAA. He was sent down at the end of June and worked as a starter in Scranton. In five starts at triple-A he had a 4.03 ERA and a .301 BAA.

Tabata was named the best Yankee prospect by Pinstripes Plus this off-season, but a wrist injury and some attitude problems has caused the organization to question him. He is hitting .248 with a .320 OBP, 3 home runs, and a .630 OPS this season.

The double-A pitchers are pretty much throw ins on this deal. Coke is the better of the two. At 26-years old Coke has a 9-4 record with a 2.60 ERA this season. He has a .242 BAA with 109 strike outs and 38 walks in 114.1 innings in Trenton this season.

Kontos is 3-9 this season with a 3.77 ERA and 103 strike outs and 43 walks in 107.1 innings. He is best known for getting arrested while celebrating after winning the New York Penn League championship with the Staten Island Yankees in 2006.

The Yankees have not confirmed this deal supposedly because the deal is pending physicals.

I like the trade, but anyone who is in love with prospects is going to be sad to see Tabata go. With Nady and Sexson added the Yankees shouldn’t be having problems against lefties anymore.

I think Tampa is toast and all those people who said Tampa was the team to beat are going to eat their words. Half a season does not a world champion make.

from pete abraham’s lohud blog on june 18:

Jose Tabata is at .237/.314/.282 for Trenton. He has nine extra-base hits and 27 RBI in 241 at-bats. A .596 OPS?

Tabata is only 19 and it’s no crime to spend another half-season in Single A ball at that age. Clearly the Eastern League is eating him up. It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees do with him.

    and from may 3:

Double-A outfielder Jose Tabata, considered one of the organization’s top prospects, was suspended for three games last week and considered asking the Yankees for his release.

A 19-year-old from Venezuela, Tabata left last Saturday’s game without permission, fleeing the ballpark after striking out in the seventh inning. That led to a three-game suspension.

Tabata is hitting .186 with no home runs and 12 RBI over 26 games for Trenton.

“The expectations of who I am supposed to be and what I am supposed to do finally got to me,” Tabata told The Trenton Times through a translator. “I made an irrational decision. Maybe it was immaturity, inexperience or just that I didn’t know how to handle what was happening. I just kept thinking I am not producing the way I should be and maybe I didn’t belong here.”
