Yankees Rumors & News

Despite the Yankees resurgent winning ways, the recent loss of Jorge Posada for possibly the remainder of the year, could be most devastating. Although everyone knows that Derek Jeter is the captain of the team, if you ask anyone in that locker room, past or present, that has played with Posada, they will tell you that he is the heart and soul of the team.

Posada would be the first one to tell a player that they need to step up or be the first one to protect one of his teammates if the situation presents itself. Furthermore, when big games arise down the stretch and eventually in the postseason, Posada’s leadership and experience with the staff is something that cannot be replaced.

This is not meant to disrespect the excellent job that Jose Molina has done, as he is one of the best backup catchers in the league and has a ton of experience. Unfortunately though, he is not Jorge Posada. Posada knows Andy Pettitte, …

Stadium Report #3: Baseball + South Florida= Hot Hot Heat

Last week I found myself in Southern Florida sitting in right field catching a Marlins game. Thanks to Philadelphia my opinion of what a ballpark should be has forever changed. While I wasn’t eating a cheesesteak at a table in center field, I was drinking a Cuba Libre in right field dodging home runs.

First of all, let me say that an afternoon Marlins game in July is a very hot affair. I’m not talking Paris Hilton “Hot.” I’m talking sun baking, skin frying, sweaty as hell – hot. Many fans were dressed more appropriately for the beach than a ballgame. If you’re wearing shorts and a t-shirt you’re wearing too much. This joint is boiling and so will your skin. Sun block is a must as are sunglasses. I lost a home run in the sun only to find it when it landed six seats over.

Tickets were cheap. Our seats were right …

Knicks Rumors & News

The New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets have had serious talks discussing swapping former-first round pick Renaldo Balkman for point guard Taurean Green and small forward Bobby Jones. If the trade happens, the Knicks could cut Green and Jones, which would get them to 15 players, as well as saving $1.32 million dollars in cap space. Balkman has a team option for the 2009-2010 season which likely would not be renewed. Currently, the Knicks have 16 players on the roster with the signing of Anthony Roberson, and need to get down to 15. Currently, Green and Jones do not have guaranteed contracts. However, Green’s contract becomes guaranteed this Thursday and Jones’s on August 15th. After the Nuggets signed Chris Andersen and Dahntay Jones, both Green and Jones became expendable.
Balkman, is not a good fit in Head Coach Mike D’Antoni’s up-tempo system. He shoots under 20% …

Mets-Marlins Series Preview

Mets Rumors & News

The Mets head down to Florida to take on the Marlins for a three-game series starting tonight. With all the talk revolving around the Phillies and Mets battling for first place, everybody’s forgotten about Florida. They’re only two games behind the Mets, and trail Philadelphia by one game. They come into the series after splitting a four-game set with the Cubs, and are 5-5 since the All-Star break. While everyone waits for them to fade, they keep hanging around. They can hit home runs in bunches, with three players over 20 (Dan Uggla 25, Hanley Ramirez 24, Mike Jacobs 22), but can their young pitching hold up in a pennant race?
The Mets just took two out of three from St. Louis, and are 6-4 since the break. Their record under Jerry Manuel is now 23-12. Whether you want to give the new manager credit or not the Mets are a completely different team …

Jets Rumors & News

New York Jets rookie runningback, Danny Woodhead, was placed on the waived injury list over the weekend after suffering a leg injury in practice on Friday. Woodhead rushed for a NCAA record 7,692 in his four seasons at Chardon State. He rushed for more than 200 yards, 19 times and scored a touchdown in 37 straight games, both are NCAA all-division records.  As a junior he rushed for 2,756 yards and 34 TD’s. He also totaled 9,479 all-purpose yards, which is second highest in college football history. The Nebraska native was named a two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner as the nation’s top Division II football player.
He was not invited to the pre-draft combine in February and was not one of the 27 running backs drafted. However, he had a strong pro day in Lincoln running the 40 between 4.33 and 4.38 He recorded a vertical jump of 38 1/2 inches …

With Trade Dealine Looming Is Ponson On Way Out?

Yankees Rumors & News

Did Sidney Ponson pitch his last game as a Yankee last night? It’s very possible. The Yankees have been lucky with Ponson thus far but last night’s performance is a reminder of how much of a risk he really is.

The winning streak eventually had to come to an end and the Yanks did take 2 of 3 in Boston, but it was still a game the Yanks needed to win. A win last night would have put the Yanks into a tie for the Wild Card with Boston and they would have gained a game on the Rays leaving them 2 out. But Ponson started in a big game spot. I’ll excuse him for the fact that he was due to get hit around at some point. He has given the Bombers more than they could’ve imagined so I’m not upset with him. It does however raise some questions about Sir Sidney in big spots. The much rumored-to-be-Yankee Jarrod Washburn pitched 8 innings and gave up …
