Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos was arrested last night and is facing assault and harassment charges after he beat up his girlfriend in a hotel room near Shea Stadium.

Burgos and his girlfriend were staying at the Holiday Inn at 114th St. and 37th Avenue, when his girlfriend called 911 reporting that Burgos was beating her. Burgos reportedly punched her numerous times in the back, slapped, and bit her. Burgos is scheduled to be arraigned today in Queens County Court.

Burgos has been sidelined since last August after having Tommy John Surgery. He’s spent this season recovering, but resumed pitching activities in mid-August. He went a combine 0-1 with a 4.50 with Kingsport, Gulf Coast, and St. Lucie Mets. Burgos was staying in New York because the Mets planned to activate him for the final month of the season. Given his new-found legal problems, that will most likely not happen.

New York hotel rooms are no strangers to domestic violence by baseball players. Last year, pitcher Julio Mateo, then with the Mariners, was arrested after he punched his girlfriend in the face in a Midtown hotel room.
