Last night New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter broke Lou Gehrig’s hits mark at Yankee Stadium. Jeters 1,270th single came against Chicago White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd in the first inning. After Jeter reached base he took off his helmet and received a huge ovation from the 52,558 fans.

The 85-year old Yankee Stadium will be torn down after this season being replaced by a new $1.3 billion one across River Avenue. Gehrig’s last hit in Yankee Stadium (1,269) came in 1939. Jeter recorded his first hit at Yankee Stadium in 1995 as a 20-year old. He has spent all of his 14 years with the franchise and it took him 81 fewer home games than the Iron Horse to break his record. Jeter has turned up his play hitting .378 since August 17th and has a .306 average on the season.

For the month of September he has an impressive .404 average with three home runs. He has never hit below .290 in a season and the nine-time All Star has collected 200 hits in a season six times. For his career, the Captain has a .323 career average at Yankee Stadium. Overall, Jeter has 2,532 hits and has a good chance of passing Gehrig’s record of 2,721 hits next season. He is also on his way to become the first Yankee to record 3,000 hits in their career.

About a week ago a friend of mine, a Mets fan, mentioned that Jeter was within reach of breaking this record. I think at the time he needed 10 hits in 9 games or something. Then he asked me if he could do it and without hesitation I replied yes. He then asked how I could be so sure. I said it’s Jeter, all he does is hit, 10 hits in 9 games is nothing for him.

I’m really going to miss Jeets once he’s gone. I’ve enjoyed watching him his entire career. He’s been really fun to watch.
