The Knicks are looking to add a center with their $5 million mid-level exception. The team has been last in block shots the past two seasons. Donnie Walsh is very high on Orlando Magic big man Marcin Gortat. The Knicks director of pro scouting is Peter Gabriel, who does a lot of scouting at Magic games. The Polish born center backs up Dwight Howard which means he has a limited role with the team. Magic GM Otis Smith can match any offer, but for financial reasons may not want to re-sign him to pay the luxury tax.
During the regular season the 25-year old started three games where he averaged 10 points, 11.7 rebounds and three blocks per game. The 7-footer had eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals in the first game of the NBA Finals in 20 minutes. The Knicks are very thin at center and can not rely on Eddy Curry to make an impact until he gets into game shape. The Knicks can not have Jared Jeffries starting any more games at center. Gortat would provide the Knicks front line with much needed toughness and a defensive presence.
