Fantasy Basketball Round 3

Pick 25: Brook Lopez

Pick 26: Derrick Rose

Pick 27: Elton Brand

Pick 28: Andre Igudola

Pick 29: Josh Smith

Pick 30: David Lee

Pick 31: Carmelo Anthony

Pick 32: Caron Butler

Pick 33: Monta Ellis

Pick 34: Paul Pierce

Pick 35: David West

Pick 36: Vince Carter

Pick 13: Steve Nash

Pick 14: Brandon Roy

Pick 15: Gilbert Arenas

Pick 16: Jason Kidd

Pick 17 (me): Jose Calderon

Pick 18: Pau Gasol

Pick 19: Chauncey Billups

Pick 20: Rajon Rondo

Pick 21: Tim Duncan

Pick 22: Kevin Garnett

Pick 23: Devin Haris

Pick 24: Joe Johnson

My Strategy: After looking over mock drafts the point guard run starts in the second round. As you can see seven point guards were taken this round. I was targeting Calderon and Billups with my selection. I chose Calderon because he should be a lock to finish top 5 in the league in assists. He also shoots close to 50% from the field and averaged over a steal and three pointer per game last season. While he has some injury concerns and has been quiet so far this preseason he is poised for a solid season.

Best pick: There a few I liked this round but one that stands out is Pau Gasol. This owner took Deron Williams in the first and pairs him with an excellent big. Gasol averaged 19 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, one block and …

I just completed my first 12 team live online draft with some followers. I’m going to break down each round.

League settings: Roto-8 category scoring

1st pick: Chris Paul

2nd pick: Lebron James

3rd pick: Dwyane Wade

4th pick: Kobe Bryant

5th pick: Kevin Durant

6th pick:Danny Granger

7th pick: Deron Williams

8th pick (me): Dirk Nowitzki

9th pick: Amare Stoudemerie

10th pick: Dwight Howard

11th pick: Chris Bosh

12th pick: Al Jefferson

There were no surprises with the first six picks as these players should be coming off the board. Picks 4-6 vary depending the owner’s preferences. One can make a case for Durant or Granger over Kobe.

My Strategy: The player I was targeting was PG Deron Williams but he was selected right before. I opted to take one of the safer players going in the first round. Dirk is the top fantasy power forward and scores in the NBA (25.9 last season). His fantasy value equaled the ninth overall player last season.

What I like about this pick is  that he contributes all across the board and shoots solid percentages (48 from the …

Giants Humbled by Saints

Giants Rumors & News

Sometimes great teams and great people have bad days. Not everything goes as intended. Evel Knievel didn’t make it to the other side of the Snake River Canyon. The Summer of George didn’t go off as planned. You launch your balloon-like contraption in your backyard, forcing your six-year-old son to hide in the crawl space of your garage while alerting the authorities that he’s trapped inside your homemade UFO as it soars across Colorado and the next thing you know you’re being arrested. Even the division-winning 2008 Giants lost to the Cleveland Browns, and the Super Bowl-winning 2007 Giants gave up 80 points in their first two games of the season. The 2009 Giants probably aren’t as good as they looked beating Oakland, 44-7, and they’re most likely not as bad as they looked yesterday, losing to New Orleans, 48-27. Should we just chalk it all up to a bad day and move on?

In honor of his homecoming and as a tribute to his father’s …

Devils Rumors & NewsGiants Rumors & News

Now that the Great Balloon Hoax of Aught-Nine is over, we can concentrate on sports again (CC Sabathia’s uniform is so big and baggy, it could probably be filled with helium and flown across the country, too). This past week in New York sports, the Yankees swept the Twins and now have to take on those pesky, team-of-destiny Angels, the Giants killed the Raiders to stay undefeated, the Jets suffered their second consecutive loss, the Rangers kept on winning, the Devils heated up, but the poor Islanders still couldn’t manage to notch their first victory of the year. The most bizarre moment of the week, though, was the Mickey Rourke sighting on the Giants sideline. And Kevin Bacon showed up at the Garden for the Knicks preseason home opener. Is the cast of Diner making the rounds of the local sports teams to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the movie?

Besides being at the Knicks game, Bacon could also be seen hiding in the Yankees dugout on Friday because, unbeknownst to A. J. Burnett, that was Shrevie’s wife, donned in curly …

Yankees Rumors & News

With the playoffs in full swing, the possibilities begin to become realities. Manager Joe Torre’s Dodgers, focus is now on the NLCS as the team swept the Cardinals in three games to proceed onward.

Across the country another team with a chief named Joe accomplished the same. Joe Girardi’s Yankees followed L.A.’s lead Sunday night in Minnesota’s Metrodome by winning their third game against the Twins. The possibility of Joe vs. Joe could happen and what a World Series that would be.

Two teams, two sweeps, two Joe’s who have much more in common then realized. These Joe’s own quite a history together.

Here is a little out of this chapter:

1) Both Joe’s Play
Ironically, both skippers were catchers. Torre* batted and threw right as did Girardi.  Both were players in New York during their career. Torre played in Queens as a Met; Girardi in the Bronx wearing Yankee Pinstripes. The selection as an All-Star only happened once …

Fantasy Faceoff: Kidd vs. Harris

Who to draft: Jason Kidd vs. Devin Harris

The case for Kidd: In his first full year with the Mavericks, Kidd averaged 9 points, 8.7 assists (5th in the NBA), 6.2 rebounds 2 steals (3rd in the NBA) and 1.6 threes per game. On any given night Kidd has a solid chance of recording a triple-double. Dallas signed F Shawn Marion who was Kidd’s former teammate with the Phoenix Suns. Baring injury Kidd is a safe third round pick because of his contributions in assists, rebounds, and threes. The formet Net also turned the ball over just 2.28 times per game which was his lowest total since 96-97. He shot 46% from the field and averaged 11.4 points per game in 10 playoff games last season.

The case against Kidd: Since being traded to Dallas during the 07-08 season he has averaged 9.5 points during that span. He also has not shot over 44% from the field since the 98-99 season. Kidd is now 36 years old and the upside is very limited. He also rarely goes to the foul line attempting just 1.3 …

Rangers Rumors & News

The season is still very early, but it looks like the Rangers have found themselves a legitimate first line. Marian Gaborik, Brandon Dubinsky and Vinny Prospal fit together like other great trios of the past – the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges, the Mod Squad, Richie, Ralph and Potsie, Cream and, of course, Charlie’s Angels (well, maybe not them – or any of the others come to think of it).

Gaborik is the first top-talent game-changer the Rangers have had since the days of Jaromir Jagr (seems like a long time ago now, doesn’t it?). But Jagr was finicky and quirky, and had trouble fitting with other linemates (except Michael Nylander). Gaborik, Dubinsky and Prospal have clicked since game one. And they’re producing on a nightly basis. Gaborik is all he was cracked up to be (I’m crossing my fingers that he doesn’t get injured as I write this), netting five goals to go along with four assists in six games. He has a point in every game, …

Fantasy Faceoff: Melo vs Kev Mart

Who to draft?

The case for Melo: Anthony set a career high last season in three per game (1.0). He averaged 27 points, 4 assists and 1.8 steals in 16 playoff games. He finished 9th in the league in free throws attempted (7.1) shooting 79%. Melo dropped 45 points against the Pacers over the weekend in China and looks to be one of the top small forwards selected.

The case against Melo: Even though he elevated his scoring output in the playoffs he averaged just 22.8 during the regular season. This was his lowest production since 04-05. His field goal % has declined each of the past three years. For Melo to have second or third round value he needs to average over 7 boards and 4 assists.

The case for Martin: Martin finished 2nd in free throws attempted (10.3), 5th in three per game (2.3) and  7th in the NBA in points per game (24.6). He has increased each of the three areas over the past three seasons. He also averaged 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals and shot 86% …

Mickey Rourke Watches Giants Destroy Raiders

Giants Rumors & News

Yesterday’s Giants game can easily be summed up in four words: Giants good, Raiders bad. Things went exactly as the Giants hoped for. They ran out to a 28-0 lead, with Eli Manning showing no signs of an injured foot. With garbage time starting in the second quarter, the Giants were able to give Manning the rest of the day off, and have David Carr take over from there. Big Blue dominated every aspect of the game, putting up 483 total yards to Oakland’s 124, six sacks to zero and 36:04 to 23:56 in time of possession.

Let’s not waste our time analyzing a blowout, though. Instead, let’s concentrate on the most interesting event of yesterday afternoon: The fact that Mickey Rourke was watching the game from the Giants sideline. What the heck was he doing there? How did he slip by security? I’m just spitballing here, but here are a few reasons I came up with for his appearance mingling with Big Blue:

He came by to personally …

Giants Rumors & NewsIslanders Rumors & News

The Giants kept on rolling this week, the Jets lost to a good Saints team (but traded for troublemaker Braylon Edwards), hockey season has started, with mixed results for the three local teams, the Mets held a day-long press conference on Monday to announce the firing of two coaches, and the $200-million juggernaut that is the Yankees steamrolled over the Twins in the opening game of their playoff series. Here are some fun facts about the Yanks and Twins:

CC Sabathia eats more food in one year than the farmers of Minnesota produce combined.

Brett Favre was warming up in the Twins bullpen in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game.

George Steinbrenner gave an inspired speech to the team down in Tampa after the Yankees’ final regular season game. It was short, yet fiery: “Where the hell is my damn calzone!”

After defeating the Tigers in their dramatic one-game showdown on Tuesday, the Twins immediately called Darryl Strawberry, Lenny Dykstra and Keith Hernandez to find out the most effective way to destroy a plane on a flight to New …

No Accountability For Mets

Mets Rumors & News

The Mets baffled everybody by holding a nine-hour press conference on Monday to announce . . . the firing of two coaches (and reassignment of a few others). Yes, that was it. Did they really need to hold a press conference for that? Omar Minaya, Jerry Manuel and Jeff Wilpon took turns showing that there’s no accountability in the world of the Mets. Here’s what I heard Wilpon saying on Monday (keep in mind, I’m just paraphrasing here):

“What happened this season was unacceptable. But we decided to keep Omar Minaya around because when he came onboard after the 2004 season, he took a Mets franchise that was seemingly irrelevant and in five short years turned them into an embarrassing laughingstock. Not everybody has the talent to do that. Instead of creating a plan and vision for future stability, we’re going to continue to put our finger in the dike and keep on plugging holes.

“Today we’re announcing the firings of Luis Alicea and Sandy Alomar Sr., because, …
