Weekly Fantasy Dish

Back a day late, this week’s fantasy dish offers more tips on what to do in your fantasy league. Whether you’re in dead last trying to knock off a playoff team, or in first place, coasting to a 1st round bye, this week’s advice can help you achieve those goals.

Key Injury Updates

Mike Gonzalez/ Rafael Soriano RP ATL- Gonzalez just came off the DL this past week and is expected to be in the hunt to steal some saves away from Soriano. Soriano comes off the DL within the week. Whoever pitches better will probably get the bulk of the saves, but both of these pitchers are very talented, so don’t be surprised if they split save opportunities for the rest of the season.

Carlos Zambrano SP CHC- Zambrano was just placed on the DL this week for having a strain in his right shoulder. While it’s not deemed as serious, he will still miss 3-4 starts. “Forgetting” Sean Marshall is going to be called up in his place …

“Willie was my hire. It was my decision, and I decided to fire Willie. It was my decision… I have vested interested in Willie Randolph doing good … Willie Randolph is a reflection of my judgment.”
This is what New York Mets General Manager Omar Minaya said about the firing of ex-manager Willie Randolph at the press conference earlier this week in Los Angeles. Randolph was not happy with how the team let him go and he has the right to be upset, but not only for that reason.

Minaya and Randolph came to the Mets organization in the same off-season, and like Minaya said, it was his decision to hire Randolph. At the start of their tenures with the Mets, success was coming from all directions. Minaya signed Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez, making an immediate statement in trying to get this team back to the headlines of the Daily News and the New York Post. Randolph and the Mets picked up 13 …

Baseball fans know that there are only four teams in Major League Baseball who haven’t had a no hitter in their franchise’s history. One of these teams are our own New York Mets. Not only do the Mets not have a no hitter or a perfect game on record, but they have a list of players who have either thrown one of these types of games or at least had a hand in them. Players have thrown a No-No before they’ve gotten to the Mets or after they were a New York Metropolitan. The following is a list of these 10 performances,  in order of how emotionally crushing they are to the mental state of Mets fans.

Billy Wagner- June 11th, 2003- Wagner combined with 5 other Astros pitchers to complete a no hitter against the New York Yankees. While Wagner only pitched 1 inning, he still played a role in a no hitter and this is why he is number 10 on this list, because it …

This past week has seen a lot of exciting developments in fantasy baseball. Jake Peavy came back this past Thursday to dominate in 6 innings of shutout baseball, relieving everyone who has Peavy as their staff Ace. It was announced that Daisuke Matsuzaka is most likely out until July or even until after the All-Star break, tearing the hearts of his owner’s, at least until they trade for sinker-balling stud, Justin Masterson. Here are some tips for the weeks and what to expect from certain players.

Key Injuries and Updates

Brad Penny SP LAD- Penny is going to flying to his hometown to get his pitching shoulder checked out with an MRI this week. Penny claims to have been feeling discomfort all season and can attest that as the reasons for his sub par performances. His medication is not doing the job it was expected to and perhaps a lot of rest will be needed for it to heal. Penny is 0-7 in his last 8 starts and …

June 3rd, 2008 will resonate with Yankees fans mostly because that was the day of Joba Chamberlain’s first career start in pinstripes. While that does outweigh any other occurrence in the state of New York, something else happened in that very same game that deserves to be recognized. Dan Giese, a former 34th round draft pick by the Boston Red Sox, relieved Joba and did a very good job in doing so. In 3.2 innings, Giese gave up only one run on 5 hits, keeping the Yankees in the game and mopping up Joba’s mess.

After being drafted by the Red Sox in 1999, Giese was relegated to minor league baseball duty, as so many late round draft picks are. In 2002, Giese was traded to the San Diego Padres for Alan Embree and still didn’t get a shot in the major leagues. He was then shipped to the Philadelphia Phillies and after the 2006 season, chose to become a …

It may be baseball season, and Yankees and Mets fans are both struggling to deal with theinconsistencies of their respective teams, but the euphoric feeling of a Super Bowl championship is still resonating in New York Giant fans’ hearts. It has been nearly 5 months since the Giants defeated the New England Patriots and took the Vince Lombardi Trophy back to East Rutherford, New Jersey, and as mini-camps are being conducted, it is easy to wonder whether or not the New York Giants can repeat, let alone make the playoffs.

While many joke about how the NFC is the NFL’s version of Jerry Springer, a circus where you don’t know what is going to happen, there are some teams on the rise that can make it difficult for the Giants to coast into the playoffs. 3 of these teams sit right next to the G-Men in the standings column, in the NFC …

Key Injuries and Updates

Jake Peavy SP SD- As all Peavy fantasy owners know, Peavy has been sidelined with discomfort and stiffness in his right elbow. What really scared his owners was that Peavy had said that this pain in his elbow felt similar …

There is nothing harder for a sports fan than having to wait through its team’s rebuilding period. For the New York Knicks and their fans, this rebuilding era has been more like an unorganized construction site on 34th street and 8th avenue, with Isiah Thomas as the Foreman. Now that Thomas is finally out of Midtown, there is finally some optimism surrounding the team and Knicks fans have been able to read fairly positive news about the team, especially surrounding new President of Basketball Operations, Donnie Walsh, and new Head coach, Mike D’antoni. Unfortunately, the reality is that there is much more work to do for the Knicks to compete with the better teams in the Eastern Conference. The first place for the Knicks to begin this overhaul is on June 26th in their own bulding at the 2008 NBA Draft.

This years draft is full of players …

The year 2003: The last time Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran hit over .300. Beltran was still playing for his former team, The Kansas City Royals, that year. That season was also the last time Beltran stole over 30 bases, and after being shipped to Houston during the 2004 season, Beltran showed what a “clutch” performer he was by hitting a record tying 8 home runs in the postseason, tying the infamous Barry Bonds for most homers in a single postseason. In addition, Beltran also homered in 5 consecutive playoff games and even hit a game winner against the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. Looking over all of these statistics, it is very easy for a New York Mets fan to sit and wonder, what went wrong?

Carlos Beltran cashed in on an 18.5 million dollar per year deal with the Mets before the 2005 season and since then, has become somewhat of a power hitter. His average has never sniffed .300 and he …

There have been many rumors floating around East Rutherford, New Jersey about another Small Forward that likes to run and shoot, making his way to the Garden State. While this may sound very appealing to New Jersey Nets fans, it is not the answer to overtaking the NBA Finals bound Boston Celtics in the upcoming years. With the acquisitions from the Jason Kidd trade, the Nets have 2 first round picks, including a lottery pick, that they can use to start building for an immediate future. This roster does not lack in talent but it lacks in fundamental basketball, which as the San Antonio Spurs have shown us, wins Championships.

With 2 franchise point guards in Marcus Williams (who the Nets drafted in 2006), and Devin Harris, they have no need to think draft or free agency at this time. Vince Carter, the enigma that he has always been, is the starting shooting guard but with no real backup, he isn’t able to play 45 minutes a night like he used to. Also, as the years …
